How To Create a First Aid Kit For Your Parrot

posted over 2 years ago by Bird Cages Now

Do you have a first aid kit prepared for your parrot? If you answered "no" to this question, you probably aren't alone. The truth is that most owners never take the time to create a first aid kit for their parrots. They either view it as unnecessary and/or too much of a hassle.

Whether you own a small parakeet or a large Macaw, every owner should have a kit on hand in the event of emergency medical situations. Just as we humans can experience potentially emergency medical situations, so can our feathered friends. By creating a first aid kit for your parrot, you'll increase the chances of a positive outcome should an emergency situation ever arise. Even it you never use it (let's hope you don't), having first aid kit readily available will give you the peace of mind knowing that your parrot is safe.

What To Include In a First Aid Kit For Your Parrot:

  • Styptic gel or powder (in case you accidentally clip your parrot's nails too far and it causes them to bleed).

  • Medical scissors

  • Gauze

  • Bandages in a variety of different sizes

  • Tweezers

  • Eyedropper

  • Triple antibiotic ointment

  • Small bag of emergency food (change it on a regular basis to ensure it's fresh).

  • Notepad or index card with the phone numbers to your regular veterinarian, an emergency veterinarian, and the poison control hotline.

  • Vet bandage wrap

  • Small flashlight with an extra set of batteries

  • Bottle of hydrogen peroxide

  • Q-tips

  • Magnifying glass

Once you've purchased or otherwise acquired all of the items mentioned above, you'll need to place them in a large container or bag. You don't have to spend a fortune on some fancy bag with a "First Aid" label, as a basic gym bag will suffice. If you're on a budget, you can even use something as simple as an old beach bag or a department store shopping bag.

Now place your newly created parrot first aid kit in an easily accessible location so that anyone -- including you and other members of your family -- can reach it. Underneath the kitchen sink is always a great place, or you store it in the medicine cabinet. Let everyone in your home know where the first aid kit is located and what it all it contains.
